Krisara Engineering has developed a point-of-care blood pressure device that doesn’t need an inflation cuff. Instead it uses subtle force actuation above the brachial artery that doesn’t require arterial occlusion, resulting in less obtrusive BP measurement.
Hypertension is increasing worldwide and represents an annual burden of $47.5 billion in healthcare costs and resources in addition to $3.5 billion yearly in lost productivity. In the US 80 million people have hypertension, though only 80% are aware of their condition, and only 48% have it adequately controlled. A critical need exists for a simple-to-use, robust, economical point-of-care (POC) blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) device that can significantly empower patients, physicians, and clinical researchers to better manage or treat hypertension. Krisara Engineering’s device will; 1) change patient health-related behavior when given access to their BP and HR information throughout the day 2) enhance goal-directed therapy, 3) change the standard of care for monitoring complicated patients in both intensive and post-surgical settings, and 4) wirelessly communicate with electronic health records (EHR) from remote locations.
Our device combines sensors into a wearable non-invasive BP measurement product that does not require an inflation cuff. The small, unobtrusive and easy to use device is worn over the patient’s brachial artery near the elbow. The product uses a new, innovative algorithm to calculate BP without occluding blood flow, making the product more comfortable than existing BP systems. Clinical benefits include: improved patient compliance based on a more comfortable device, wireless connections to electronic health records, larger number of readings, profile of BP behavior, identification of white-coat syndrome, nocturnal and masked hypertension, BP variability assessment and 24-hr efficacy of medicine, and stronger predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Additionally, patient behavior may be modified when their 24-hr BP is known to them.
